Moranfest 2024 – Part 2 – Kilkenny

Welcome to Road Trip Day! On Sunday morning (7/21, for future reference), we woke up bright and early and grabbed breakfast in the hotel before stuffing our bags into an Uber. We rode to the airport where we picked up our rental car (a Ford Kuga, which is the UK version of a Ford Escape). We were able to score an automatic transmission, so that helped eliminate one facet of the challenge that is driving over there. What are the other facets of said challenge? The driving side is on the right, driving is on the left, and distance is in kilometers. Thanks to CarPlay, we got to see miles as well so that was nice.

We had about five ours on the road ahead of us and I thought we should take the opportunity to visit at least one town on our way to break up the trip. Since Hubs and I road tripped through the Irish countryside ourselves nineteen years prior, and htis being TG’s first trip, we let them choose a town to stop in on our way to Westcove. Being a tad obsessed with South Park, they picked Kilkenny (IYKYK). It’s a well-known enough place with a nice castle where people can spend their money and walk through and learn about the fancy people (the Butlers, earls, marquesses and dukes of Ormond) who lived there for over 600 years.

Anxious to get to Westcove and see the fam, we updated them as we got closer to the house. When we “arrived,” we quickly realized that someone (who shall remain unnamed on this page) put the wrong Westcove House in the GPS, and we ended up being about 45 minutes out of our way. No matter. We got back on the road with the correct coordinates and arrived just before dinner. That is also just after it got cloudy and stayed that way for much of our remaining time in Ireland.

Please enjoy this image of my nephew, lounging like a supermodel on the patio ledge at the main house in Westcove. Photo credit: TG.

In our next installment, some west coast adventures!
