Coquito

Coquito

Coquito translates to “little coconut,” and is a traditional Christmas time drink with origins in Puerto Rico. Some call it Puerto Rican Eggnog, but it’s definitely its own thing. I have read that some put an egg yolk in it, but I did not.

I first learned of the drink in the movie, Seneca (which happens to be written and directed by my high school friend Jason Chaet), and had just googled a recipe when my college friend Becky posted photos of the bottles of coquito that she was making up to give away at Christmas (she is from PR). I found several recipes via the googles, but asked her if she’d like to share hers. She PM’d me the following image and joked that I might want to practice my (pretty much non-existent) Spanish.

How cool is this? The recipe pictured was written in hand by Becky’s aunt. From the yellowed edges of the page, it’s clearly an old family recipe and I’m honored to share it.

Y’all know I’ve got the smarts, so sure enough, I managed to figure it out with a little help from Google Translate.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (13oz) undiluted evaporated milk.
  • 1 can (14 oz) condensed milk
  • 1 cup of rum*
  • 1/2 cup of coconut creme (like Coco Lopez)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Cinnamon (powder or sticks) to taste

Directions

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together in a blender.
  2. Serve.

*The rum can be added later, if you prefer to make it “virgin” so the kiddos can enjoy as well, or if you’re just not a boozy person.
